Gray, G.J.A bibliography of the works of Sir Isaac Newton, 2nd ed., 1907,p. 5-7
The first issue. No.6 in Gray. Leaf of 'Errata' at end. With Halley's verses to the work - Saeculi Gentisque nostrae Decus; engr. folding diagram opp. p.496, and diagrams in the text. Some of the errata have been corrected in MS.
Bt. from Southeran, £18 18s., Dec. 18, 1913. I missed a copy at 16s at Johnston's, Edinburgh, I. v.14.[W.O.]
Published about Midsummer, 1687. Dr. Vincent presented to the Royal Society the MS. "'wherein he [Newton] gives a mathematical demonstration of the Copernican hypothesis, and makes out all the phenomena of the celestial motions by the only supposition of a gravitation to the centre of the sun decreasing as the squares of the distances reciprocally'. Halley, who was secretary, wrote on 22 May to Newton that the society 'resolved to print it at their own charge in a large quarto of a fair letter... I am intrusted to look after the printing of it and will take care that it shall be performed as well as possible'. But for Halley the 'Principia' would not have existed... He paid all the expenses, he corrected the proofs, he laid aside his own work in order to press forward to the utmost the printing." (D.N.B.)[W.O.]
